You are picturing vows among the roses, not checking the forecast every ten minutes. A good rain plan does more than promise a room somewhere inside. It protects the ceremony, the meal, and your peace of mind even if the sky changes its mind.

See the backup space in person

Ask to walk the wet-weather ceremony layout at your actual guest count. Can everyone sit with a clear view? Will music and microphones work there? Is it accessible? If the reception is planned in the same room, who flips it, how long does that take, and where do guests wait?

If a tent is the backup, ask whether it is already reserved or only available if the rental company still has inventory. Get a quote for the tent with sides, flooring, lighting, delivery, setup, and required permits or inspections, where applicable. A tent-only sticker price rarely tells the whole story.

Establish the decision timeline

  • Who makes the weather call—the couple, venue manager, planner, or rental company?
  • What is the last time the setup can change without extra labor or cancellation fees?
  • How are vendors told, and who updates the guests?
  • Where will the ceremony happen if the ground is muddy even after the rain stops?
  • Is there a separate plan for heat, wind, or a cold snap?

Put the decision-maker and deadline in the event plan. “We'll decide on the day” is not enough when chairs, flowers, sound, and catering all need direction.

Check the money clauses

Read whether a rain move costs extra for staffing, space, security, or additional hours. Ask what happens if a venue's promised indoor space becomes unavailable, and whether you can move furniture or décor from the garden. If an outdoor setting is the whole reason you chose the venue, make the backup a must-see before paying a nonrefundable deposit.

Make the indoor version feel like your wedding

Choose a few elements—your ceremony music, favorite flowers, or a gathering spot for family—that can move inside easily. You are not settling for Plan B; you are giving the people you love a comfortable place to witness the same commitment.
